Doctors Outreach and DripDrop will be traveling to Malawi in October to examine whether a next generation oral rehydration solution (ORS) with novel formulation and improved taste profile can improve compliance and, therefore, outcomes. Malawi is one of the poorest nations in the world, and has a small number of pediatricians. Childhood mortality due to infectious diarrhea remains high, despite gains over the past 40 years. Poor compliance with the World Health Organization’s ORS is leading to the use of inferior, first-line products by mothers, such as soda, juices, and sports drinks; all of which have a superior taste profile. Our main goal is to minimize childhood mortality from diarrhea and dehydration by traveling to three outpatient facilities in the Blantyre district of Malawi.
